Scooter and motorcycle sales soar as drivers want to save money, gas, and air quality
Gas prices and a “greener” mentality have created a market for gas-efficient vehicles. Imagine getting around in a vehicle that gets 70 miles per gallon, reduces carbon monoxide emissions by 80% for every mile driven, and that never is an issue to park. All of these reasons have contributed to high sales at Wilmore Scooter Works. Owner Jim Wilmore is the exclusive Vespa and Piaggio dealer in San Luis Obispo County, and now adds Moto Guzzi to his inventory.
According to the Motorcycle Industry Association, scooter sales in the U.S. rose from about 42,000 in 2000 to over 131,000 in 2007. The first quarter of 2008 saw an additional 25% increase. Locally, Jim Wilmore, owner of Wilmore Scooter Works in downtown San Luis Obispo, reports his sales for the Spring and Summer period were up 300% over the same time last year.
Moto Guzzi (also known as "Guzzi") is an Italian motorcycle manufacturer established in 1921 that has endured from the industry's infancy to its place today as the oldest European manufacturer in continuous motorcycle production. Guzzi is now one of seven brands owned by Piaggio, the company that also owns Vespa.
Wilmore Scooter Works is located at 1144 Higuera Street in San Luis Obispo. They carry a wide variety of Vespa, Piaggio, and Moto Guzzi vehicles for purchase. The scooters range in price from $2,000 to $6,000 and come in a variety of colors. Depending upon the model, vehicle speeds vary from 40 to roughly 80 mph.
